The Department of Public Instruction, Wisconsin Educational Services Program for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (WESP-DHH) is currently seeking a Superintendent Administrative Assistant. This position is located at 309 W. Walworth Avenue, Delavan.

Starting pay will be between $21.594 and $36.631 per hour. This position is in pay schedule 81, range 03. A twelve-month probationary period is required.

Job Duties

This position provides professional, confidential administrative support to the Director of the Wisconsin Educational Services Program for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (WESP-DHH) in a wide variety of management operations. The position performs complex administrative functions and acts as a liaison between departments within the Wisconsin School for the Deaf (WSD), WESP-DHH Outreach, and the office of the Director. Liaison functions extend to DPI, other state agencies, and community organizations that interface with WESP-DHH. When requested by the Director, represents the Director at meetings both on and off campus. Attends meetings and provides sign language interpreting services for the Director and others in attendance. Assists the Director in budget preparation, confidential labor management matters, and special studies, survey and research activities. Oversees the provision of interpreter services for students, staff, and visitors.

Special Notes

  • An American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) rating level of 3 upon hire and 3+ upon completion of probation is required. If you have an ASLPI rating below a 3 and have not had your ASLPI skills rated recently, please have your skills reassessed prior to applying.
  • Certification as an interpreter by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. or having passed the Wisconsin Interpreting and Transliterating Assessment Level 1 is required. A well qualified candidate will have passed the Wisconsin Interpreting and Transliterating Assessment Level 2 and will have the Comprehensive Service Certification for Interpreters of the Deaf from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), or an equivalent certification.
  • Sign language skills will be evaluated during the interview process.
  • Part of the selection process will include a criminal background check.
  • A valid driver's license is required upon appointment.
  • Travel and some evening and weekend hours are also required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of administrative practices and procedures necessary to plan, implement, and coordinate activities; local, state, and national issues relevant to the deaf and hard of hearing communities; information analysis techniques; excellent expressive and receptive American Sign Language skills; and oral and written communication skills. Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters, work with a variety of people in an effective and efficient manner, and organize work and utilize available resources to accomplish a variety of tasks.
